This year brought some fierce competition between those nominated at the 74th annual Golden Globes. Moonlight, La La Land, Fences, The Crown, and The People vs OJ Simpson were some of the critics favorite projects last year. La La Land swept the event with seven wins including the Best Actor and Actress award and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Tracee Ellis Ross won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical – TV Series; the first black woman to win since Debbie Allen in 1983! Viola Davis rightfully won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences. Both women received their first win at the ceremony as well.
Donald Glover and the Atlanta crew won for Best Comedy TV Series and Glover won for Best Actor in a Comedy TV Series; he went on in true black millennial fashion to thank the black folks of Atlanta and the Migos for their current hit, Bad and Bougie, “just because it’s the best song ever”. Moonlight did not win most of the awards it was nominated for but it did win the biggest award it was nominated for which was Best Picture – Drama. It seems like La La Land will be it’s biggest competition in the coming award season.
The night also saw Meryl Streep receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her incredible acting career. She took obvious jabs at the President elect by stating that many people in the room were born or from countries outside of the US so if they were to be kicked out, America would not have the many great contributions that it has. That sentiment is great but most of the actors she named were still of European descent and these groups of people are not targeted like non european communities. She also went on to say how the attitude and values of the new President elect influences the society to bully those who are different from them and she is right.
