The trailer for the new Showtime series, Chi has been released and it looks beautifully intense. Actress, writer, and Chicago native, Lena Waithe is the creator behind the new show. Waithe recently won an Emmy for best Comedy Writing for her work on the Netflix series, Master of None, making her the first African-American woman to win the award.
From the trailer, the show looks to include multiples storylines, intense drama, and a bright color palette. Showtime describes the show overall plot as, “Exploring the humanity beneath the headlines sensationalizing the South Side of Chicago, ‘The Chi’ is a coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.”
The cast includes young and talented actors, Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Jacob Latimore (Detroit), Tiffany Boone (The Following), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Jahking Guillory (Kicks) and also includes veteran actors, Sonja Sohn (The Wire), Steven Williams (Supernatural), and Yolonda Ross (The Get Down). Rick Famuyiwa, director of The Wood and Dope, will direct the premier episode of the series and rapper/actor Common will be one of the producers.
